About Steve

Meet Steve Schmitt

Steve’s roots in St. George run deep. A lifelong resident and local entrepreneur, he has spent his working life in the trades and on the land: nearly 30 years as an electrician running Electra Modern Controls, landscaping through Nature’s Way Gardens, and looking after the grounds as property manager for the Tim Hortons camps. Today he still works part time at Walter’s Greenhouses & Garden Centre, looking after their maintenance needs. His work has taken him onto farms, into homes, and through businesses all over this community, where he built a reputation for finishing the job, keeping his word, and showing up when it mattered.

Home is the Schmitt homestead in St. George, where Steve and his wife Holly tend the land and grow their own vegetables, and where their seven grandchildren keep things lively. When he isn’t at a council or community meeting, you’ll likely find him in the garden or in the workshop on a carpentry project.

Steve has spent his life giving back through municipal service, community organizations, local journalism, and volunteer efforts. That experience has given him a strong understanding of our communities, their history, and the challenges we face. At Council, Steve listens carefully, asks tough questions, and works to find practical solutions that reflect the long-term interests of Ward 1. He is a steady and respected advocate who will continue to work hard for our community and for you.

Experienced. Engaged. Committed to Ward 1.

The Plan

Steve Schmitt’s Priorities for Ward 1

Infrastructure Before Development

Supporting careful consideration of infrastructure needs and capacity when planning for future development. Growth should be paced by what our roads, water, and services can genuinely support, so that new development strengthens our communities rather than straining them.

Fiscal Responsibility

Emphasizing informed decision-making and financial planning, with attention to the costs of municipal decisions and their impact on property taxpayers. Every dollar Council spends comes from residents, and it deserves the same care you’d give your own budget.

Communication & Public Confidence

Seeking improved communication between municipal government and residents, including more opportunities for public involvement and consultations. Residents should hear about decisions that affect them before they’re made, not after.

Rural & Cultural Heritage

Supporting the protection of the area’s rural character, cultural heritage, and natural resources. The history and rural character of South Dumfries are part of what makes Ward 1 home, and they’re worth protecting as we grow.

My job is to listen, ask the hard questions, and make sure Ward 1 is heard at County Council. St. George has been home my whole life. I know this community and its history, and I will keep working for the people who live here.
